SHAW FAMILY CAMPING IN CAMBRIDGESHIRE

Information found on Cambridge.gov
The antiquary George Nathan Maynard of Whittlesford (c.1829-1904) writes in the early 1860’s of the Shaws; a noted Gipsy family of Cambridgeshire. Moses Shaw, a reliable and wealthy man who ‘in token of his worldly substance prided himself in wearing upon his garments large and massive silver buttons to the admiration of all his followers’

Moses' professed occupation was sieve making and rat-catching but his preference, being more lucrative, was playing the fiddle at feasts and fairs whilst his wife ‘Old Mimy' ran a stall selling small wares and gingerbread and telling fortunes.

Article regarding Shaw Family in USA dated June 23rd 1907
The latest camp of Gypsies to be established on the Eastern parkway is that of the Shaw Family
These people like the others are of English descendant, they are a properous looking crowd with perfect
raft of children.
It was in the early evening that the Eagle Representive called at the camp, in one bed seven children were carefuly tucked up asleep, while one or more rolled about the floor.
They read palms, make feather dusters and window cleaners and do odd jobs for a living.
Shaw claims to be 1st cousin to * Gypsy Smith* the evanglist,
The Shaw tribe travels in the same vehicles they used in England and members indulge in a penchant for collecting curios.
Among their most precious belongings is a large brass kettle which is only used at Christmas feasts and its claimed is more than a 100 years old and has been in family that length of time.
They also own some very fine china besides a pair of black Arabian horses and a great mastiff that took 1st prize at a bench show at Manchester England.
They use in cooking their meals a southern planters step- stove and all their utensils are either brass or copper,a more contented family could not be found in eastern parkway Brooklyn.
notes:
The Shaw family are camped near to or with 3 other families all English :
Patience Stanley head of English Stanley Tribe
Reynolds another English group of Gypsies, who in their party has also a Mrs Mace a daughter of Grandma Reynolds leader of the tribe
James & Bryant are the other English Tribe and all tribes state they are of Epping Forest England.
